Mitsotakis from EU Summit: Europe must protect consumers and businesses, we will not tolerate a repeat of the 2015 migration crisis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that Greece is doing everything it can to support the national economy and emphasized the need to send a message that Europe will protect its external borders.

Arriving at today’s EU summit of heads of state and government, Mitsotakis highlighted the need for clear responses:

  • Activation of EU mutual assistance: “The crisis highlighted the need for the real activation of the EU’s mutual assistance clause. Greece rushed to support Cyprus when it was attacked. Many European countries followed, and I will request a clear roadmap,” he said.
  • Energy and economic impacts: “Attacks on oil installations could drive up energy prices. Reason must prevail, and attacks on energy infrastructure must stop,” Mitsotakis added. He underlined that Europe must be prepared to respond effectively: “The response must be national and European. Greece is doing everything it can to support the Greek economy. If the crisis continues, we will need coordinated European responses. This will be part of today’s discussion.”
  • Potential refugee flows: Mitsotakis warned that the crisis should not trigger a new refugee crisis in Europe: “Europe cannot tolerate a repeat of the 2015 crisis. We must be prepared for all scenarios. We want to send a message that Europe must protect its external borders.”
