“Today we honor the memory of Evagoras Pallikaridis, 69 years after he was executed by hanging at the age of just 19. His sacrifice is an emblematic example of the bravery of our Cypriot brothers and sisters in their struggle for freedom.”
This is what the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias wrote in a post on the social network X.
Evagoras Pallikaridis was a Greek-Cypriot fighter of the EOKA fighting for the unification of Cyprus with Greece, a hero of Cyprus and a poet.
For his actions he was arrested by the British forces and executed by hanging at the age of only 19.
He was the youngest but also the last fighter to be hanged by the British.
His grave is in the Prisoner’s Memorial in Lefkosia.
