The opposition Law and Justice party (PiS) presented Przemysław Czarnek as its candidate for prime minister at its congress in Krakow on March 7th. The move aims to return the party to power in the next parliamentary elections.
At the Krakow event, PiS party leader Jarosław Kaczyński stressed that the upcoming campaign requires “unity and coordinated action.” The party believes Czarnek has the ability to unite its various factions and be a competitive contender in the 2027 race.
Czarnek, 48, is a lawyer and university lecturer who previously served as governor of the Lublin region and as Poland’s minister of education and science from 2020 to 2023.
The announcement prompted a swift response from current Prime Minister Donald Tusk, leader of the Civic Coalition. In a statement on X, Tusk suggested “three Confederations are against” his coalition. The PM added: “There’s nothing to fear, but they shouldn’t be underestimated.”
One thing is certain: in 2027, Poland will have an all-out battle ahead of it.

While opinion polls show the Civic Coalition currently leading PiS, the political landscape remains competitive.
Analysts say Czarnek’s nomination reflects PiS’s effort to reinvigorate the party ahead of the elections, particularly after a period of declining support.
