According to Lina Mendoni, officials from the Ministry, with the assistance of the Greek Embassy in Belgium, received 262 photographs, 16 documents, and 4 old banknotes, which had been put up for sale by a Belgian collector on an online auction site two weeks ago.
Statement by Lina Mendoni:
“The transfer of ownership of the photographic collection, which includes the photos of the executed individuals in Kaisariani, has been completed. Ministry officials, aided by the Greek Embassy in Belgium, collected the 262 photographs, 16 documents, and 4 old banknotes that the Belgian collector had displayed for sale online two weeks ago.”
“The Ministry of Culture acted with exceptional speed to complete a complex task, which involved authenticating the collection, designating it as a monument, documenting its provenance, negotiating to ensure it remained intact, and transferring it fully to the Greek State. All necessary procedures were completed in accordance with existing legal frameworks. I thank all Ministry staff and external collaborators for their full dedication to this intricate endeavor. These photographs—testaments to the courage and patriotism of the executed Greeks in Kaisariani on May 1, 1944—are now property of the Greek State.”
