Venezuela: Amnesty granted to 379 political prisoners

Venezuela’s judicial system has approved the release of 379 political prisoners following the passage of an amnesty law signed last week by the country’s acting president, Delsi Rodríguez.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office has submitted amnesty requests to the competent courts (…) for a total of 379 people,” said MP Jorge Areatha, who chairs the committee overseeing the process, on Friday night.

“These individuals will be released and granted amnesty between tonight and tomorrow morning,” he added.

On Thursday, Venezuela’s parliament unanimously approved the amnesty law, which is expected to secure the release of hundreds of detainees identified as political prisoners by the opposition and non-governmental organizations.
