Unidentified drone crashes at military base in northern Poland

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of unknown origin crashed at a military base in Przasnysz, northern Poland, on 28 January.

The drone came down just metres from a weapons storage facility, inside a highly sensitive electronic warfare unit. The base hosts the 2nd Radio-Electronic Centre, a reconnaissance and electronic warfare unit responsible for monitoring radio communications in north-eastern Poland, including the strategically significant Suwałki Gap.

Soldiers on duty observed the drone flying over the base before it crashed approximately 70 metres from an ammunition depot. Following an initial inspection, guards transported the UAV to a building within the base for security reasons.

According to Radio Zet, the Polish Military Police confirmed that the incident is under investigation, while the drone’s origin has not yet been determined. Reuters was unable to immediately reach the Military Police for comment.

In a statement to local media, a spokesperson for the Chief of the Military Gendarmerie said that the Military Police post in Przasnysz was notified of the incident at around 18:00 and immediately took the required measures, including securing the UAV and taking witness statements.
